Proparco’s financing for UNIFIN aims to support its SME activity, particularly in the sustainable agriculture sector.
Client presentation
UNIFIN was set up in 1993 and has become a leading player in the financing of SMEs in Mexico through financial services and products tailored to the needs of Mexican entrepreneurs, such as leasing and factoring.
Project description
Proparco’s USD 65m million financing facility will strengthen UNIFIN’s activities towards SMEs, in particular in the sustainable agriculture sector. This operation, Proparco’s first with UNIFIN, will support financial inclusion in Mexico at a time when SMEs are particularly affected by the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Project impact
The project will achieve the following impacts:
- Support for the economic development of Mexico by financing UNIFIN’s corporate clients. They are mainly made up of SMEs and microenterprises, which are historically either poorly or not served by the country’s banking sector.
- Support for 4,100 jobs, mainly in the companies financed through PROPARCO’s credit line.
- A contribution to the fight against climate change, as 25% of the credit line will be specifically earmarked for clean energy and energy efficiency projects (mitigation projects).
- A mobilization of USD 105.6m of private finance (ratio of 1.26).
The project will contribute to SDG 7 (“Affordable and clean energy”), SDG 8 (“Decent work and economic growth”) and SDG 13 (“Climate action”).
