Promoting access to reliable, affordable and decarbonised energy

Proparco works alongside private sector partners to support the energy transition and meet the growing energy needs of emerging and developing countries. Proparco's work focuses on the deployment of renewable energies such as solar and wind energy, hydroelectricity and biomass, which harness local natural resources.
By supporting the development of efficient, affordable and sustainable energy services, Proparco is actively helping to improve people's living conditions, combat climate change and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Proparco's work also helps to boost economic growth, insofar as a high-quality energy supply is an essential factor in food production, job creation, housing construction, regional and local connectivity and public safety.
Developing renewable energy production
Supporting low-carbon electricity production solutions encourages their technological maturity and helps reduce their costs for consumers. Proparco's work with developers of solar, wind, hydroelectric and biomass power plants helps turn these sectors into key drivers of the energy transition, and a major lever for economic, social and environmental development.
Promoting access to electricity
Many countries are grappling with the need to improve access to electricity for their populations and businesses and to supply power to the most remote areas. Proparco provides financing resources to partners capable of deploying effective solutions on a large scale. Mini-grids, individual solar kits or solutions for supplying energy to critical infrastructure such as telecom towers are among the solutions suitable for electrifying poorly-served or off-grid regions.
Project focus – Improving the energy efficiency of telecom towers in Africa
Proparco has granted a €16 million loan to support AktivCo, a subsidiary of the Camusat group, with four projects aimed at hybridising telecommunications towers in Burkina Faso, Niger, Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon, which will improve the energy efficiency of these services and the reliability of the telecommunications network.
Supporting energy transition stakeholders
Private stakeholders in the energy sector – whether local or international developers – play a key role in the energy transition. Proparco is committed to supporting them on their decarbonisation pathway by financing renewable assets or through “transformational” loans that are subject to conditions that encourage improvements in their environmental and social practices.
Supporting innovation
Energy is a constantly evolving sector, continually enriched by new business and technology models. Proparco is committed to supporting the innovations that will become the solutions of tomorrow by financing pilot initiatives.
Project focus – Floating solar power in Indonesia
Proparco is financing the development, construction and operation of the Saguling project, a 60MW floating solar power plant on the island of Java. It is ACWA's first floating solar project and the second in the country. It is also the first project to be funded under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) initiative in Indonesia.
