Our activities in Latin America and the Caribbean

During the 2000s, Latin American countries achieved significant progress, which reduced poverty and led to the emergence of a new middle class. But despite this progress, Latin America needs to overcome a number of obstacles to sustainable development, starting with reducing social and spatial inequalities and preserving the environment.
Supporting green, inclusive growth
In Latin American and Caribbean countries, Proparco conducts its activities in phase with the French government mandate for emerging countries given to AFD Group, which aims to support “green and inclusive growth”.
This strategy has two main objectives: helping the subcontinent’s economies transition to a growth model that consumes fewer natural resources and emits lower levels of greenhouse gases, and reducing inequalities.
Proparco's action in Latin America and the Caribbean
Proparco works to support private sector initiatives to combat climate change and reduce inequality.
- Supporting the energy transition through renewable energy and energy efficiency projects (solar, wind, hydroelectric power, biomass, etc.).
- Facilitating access to essential goods and services by strengthening the provision of healthcare and education (expanding and upgrading hospital services and private university campuses) and access to services (water, sanitation).
Project focus - Drinking water for all: the work of Águas do Rio in Brazil
As part of privatising water and sanitation services in the state of Rio, the private sector operator Águas do Rio – supported by IDB Invest and Proparco – was awarded two concessions in 2021, covering nearly 10 million customers. Connection to a reliable water network, managed by state-of-the-art technology, has transformed the lives of residents, particularly in certain favelas in Rio.
- Promoting financial inclusion through the development of microfinance for small businesses in the formal and informal sector.
- Supporting the agriculture and agri-food sectors by helping local banks, particularly to facilitate the financing of agriculture and agri-food projects and enhancing the capacity of Latin American players to meet growing demand for food in the region.
