Imon International is the largest microfinance institution in Tajikistan and is recognized for its client protection. Its aim is to scale up its lending activities. It provides many other services – including training.
Client presentation
IMON International started its activities in 1999 in the context of a partnership project between Nation Association of Business Women in Tajikistan (NABWT) and the NGO Mercy Corps. It is the largest microfinance institution in Tajikistan. In 2014, it served 94,000 clients via 25 branches and 135 offices nationwide. Its loan portfolio stands at USD 132m, over half of which is in the agricultural and trade sectors.
Project description
Proparco’s financing will support the development of IMON International’s lending activities. The institution offers a range of products and financial services (microcredit, leasing, foreign exchange services), as well as non-financial services (training for start-ups for women entrepreneurs, financial education…). The MFI is certified by the international Smart Campaign initiative for its respect for client protection principles and has developed practices for the prevention of excessive indebtedness, the fair and respectful treatment of clients, as well as complaint handling procedures.
Project impact
This operation will contribute to the development of microfinance in a country where it is often the only way for populations to access financial services. It will support job creation and economic and social development in Tajikistan, the poorest country of the former Soviet Union.
