Proparco is guaranteeing financing allocated to Arma Casablanca by the Moroccan Bank for Trade and Industry (BMCI). Arma Casablanca is responsible for managing the urban sanitation and household waste collection service in four of the city’s prefectures, representing some 1.4 million inhabitants. By renewing and upgrading equipment, this project will contribute to improving the collection and urban sanitation service.
Client presentation
Set up in 2011, Arma Group is specialized in managing household waste collection and urban sanitation services. The Group currently operates in 20 municipalities, including 5 of the 10 largest in Morocco. In 2019, Arma won a major bid invitation launched by the Municipality of Casablanca, which has delegated the management of the urban sanitation and household waste collection service to it for four of its eight prefectures.
Project description
The objective of these new delegated management contracts is to improve the collection and urban sanitation service. This involves significantly increasing the investments to be made (mainly to renew and increase the fleet of vehicles in circulation and collection points) and switching to night collection to improve traffic flow and truck movement. Proparco’s participation will contribute to upgrading the service by digitalizing the rolling stock (including the installation of smart meters), a first in the sector in Morocco. This will optimize the circuits and improve the monitoring and control of services in real time.
Project impact
The project should have major impacts by contributing to:
- Improving the quality and safety of the waste collection service for some 1.4 million inhabitants in the targeted neighborhoods, by renewing part of the fleet in circulation and digitalizing operations (smart city technologies) for the real-time monitoring of service performance;
- Improving the cleanliness of public spaces by reducing stagnant waste in the collection points;
- Supporting over 2,400 local jobs over the next 5 years.
This project will thereby contribute to SDGs n° 8 (Decent work and economic growth), 9 (Industry, innovation and infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable cities and communities) and 12 (Sustainable production and consumption).
