Proparco supports the development of the Cabreto solar power plant in the Dominican Republic
Published on
Proparco is supporting the energy transition of the Dominican Republic by financing the Cabreto photovoltaic project, a 55.4 MWp solar power plant developed by Akuo, a leading French renewable energy developer. This project will contribute to strengthening the country’s electricity infrastructure while delivering strong climate, economic and social impacts.
Proparco has committed USD 45 million in senior debt to finance the construction and operation of Cabreto, a 55.4 MWp (50 MWac) photovoltaic power plant located in the municipality of San Antonio de Guerra, in the province of Santo Domingo, in the Dominican Republic.
Cabreto is developed by Akuo Energy, a French renewable energy company with a strong international track record and a proven experience in the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic is the largest economy in the Caribbean and is experiencing sustained growth in electricity demand reaffirming energy transition as a national priority. Dominican Republic is one of the most dynamic renewable energy markets in the region.
This solar plant is expected to generate approximately 95.4 GWh of clean electricity per year and provide new or improved access to electricity for more than 23,000 people. The project should have significant broader economic effects supporting or maintaining up to direct and indirect 600 jobs, mobilizing over 250 workers, and creating around 25 long-term jobs. The project is expected to avoid more than 57,600 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions per year, contributing to the country’s objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2030.
This financing is fully aligned with Proparco’s strategy to support renewable energy development in high-potential markets and to accompany French companies with strong international track records. Proparco has already supported Akuo through the financing of previous projects, and this operation further strengthens a long-standing partnership with a leading French renewable energy player.
