Proparco partners with Meridiam to support Kenya’s renewable energy capacity by investing in Kenya's second-largest wind farm, supplying clean power to hundreds of thousands of households.
Paris, November 12, 2025 – Proparco, the French development finance institution, has completed an equity co-investment in Meridiam’s flagship Kipeto 100 MW Wind Farm, located in Kajiado County, Kenya.
Kipeto Wind Farm is the second‑largest wind power plant in Kenya, located approximately 70 kilometres south of Nairobi. It has been in commercial operation since July 2021 under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Kenya's national utility. Kipeto Wind Farm generates approximately 432 GWh of power annually and is a key supplier of clean electricity to the national grid. Its proximity to the capital reinforces grid reliability and serves the Nairobi economic corridor, the country’s largest demand centre.
The transaction is a co-investment alongside Meridiam Infrastructure Africa Fund II (MIAF II), in which Proparco is an investor.
Key impact outcomes:
- Installed capacity: 100 MW (across 60 GE turbines).
- Beneficiaries: energy equivalent to the needs of ~250,000 homes (over half a million beneficiaries).
- Climate: more than 200,000 tCO₂e avoided per year by displacing fossil‑fuel generation.
- Jobs: more than 500 direct and indirect jobs supported.
- Annual distributions to a community development trust supporting local health, education and infrastructure for surrounding Maasai communities.
- Advanced biodiversity action plan (BAP), combined with conservation initiatives in the surrounding area.
H.E. Mr Arnaud Suquet, the French Ambassador to Kenya stated: “By investing in the second largest wind power plant in Kenya, and as the country’s first bilateral partner for energy provision, France reaffirms its commitment to contribute to Kenya’s goal of 100% renewable electricity production and universal access by 2030. This collaboration between Proparco and Meridiam, a leading investor in renewable energy projects, is emblematic of what the France–Kenya partnership can deliver at scale: reliable and clean power, affordable and sustainable energy, measurable climate impact, and shared prosperity for surrounding communities.”
“Partnering with Meridiam at Kipeto reinforces our commitment to accelerate Africa’s low‑carbon transition while delivering tangible socio‑economic benefits,” said Jean Guyonnet-Dupérat, Regional Director for East Africa at Proparco. “Kipeto provides dependable, affordable clean power, avoids over 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually, supports jobs and channels a share of profits to community projects—fully consistent with Proparco’s mandate and Kenya’s climate ambitions.”
Thierry Déau, Founder and CEO of Meridiam said: “We’re pleased to welcome Proparco as a co-investor in the Kipeto wind farm, reinforcing a strong partnership built on successful joint projects across Africa. United by a commitment to sustainable infrastructure, Meridiam and Proparco have backed transformative initiatives in clean energy, transport, and digital access in Africa - including Dakar’s electric Bus Rapid Transit system and Biovea biomass power plant in Côte d’Ivoire. These impactful investments advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals and help shape a more resilient future for the continent.”
