Grupo Promerica advances regional sustainability strategy with USD 50 million Proparco financing for green building in Costa Rica
Published on

Reinforcing its deep-seated commitment to sustainable development, Grupo Promerica, one of the largest financial groups in Central America, is highlighting a new milestone in its longstanding partnership with Proparco. This commitment is demonstrated through a recent USD 50 million financing agreement from Proparco, a subsidiary of Agence Française de Développement Group, to its subsidiary Banco Promerica Costa Rica. The loan is aimed at expanding the financing of projects that promote sustainable and green buildings, directly aligning with Grupo Promerica’s corporate sustainability goals.
This transaction is a prime example of Grupo Promerica’s strategy to foster green development across the region. The financing is specifically structured to support the entire sustainable construction value chain. In line with the strategies of both institutions, 40% of the loan will be directed toward the construction of buildings certified under the EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) standard, while the remaining 60% will be allocated to mortgages for properties that have achieved EDGE certification. This dual allocation ensures comprehensive support for the development of resource-efficient, environmentally friendly buildings.
The EDGE certification is a global standard that recognizes green buildings achieving at least a 20% reduction in energy, water, and embodied energy in materials compared to conventional buildings, thereby accelerating the adoption of low-emission construction practices. This initiative contributes to building a low-carbon economy and advancing the transition toward sustainable growth in Costa Rica.
This partnership contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
● SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth): by improving the economy.
● SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): by contributing to sustainable urbanization and planning.
● SDG 13 (Climate Action): by reducing GHG emissions.
