Published on

Proparco, the private sector arm of Agence Française de Développement Group (AFD Group), has announced exceptional results for 2024, with €2.8 billion in signed projects, 47% of which were dedicated to the African continent. This record level of activity reflects our commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change (which represents one third of our activity), food security, and gender equality (which accounts for a quarter of our projects). The exceptional 40% increase in Proparco’s activity compared to the previous record set in 2023 highlights the growing engagement of the private sector in financing sustainable development.
With 200 projects signed in 2024, Proparco’s activity is focused on six strategic priorities:
- Protecting the planet: one third of our activity, representing €912 M in climate-positive financing, including €50 M for climate change adaptation
- Gender equality: representing a quarter of our activity, with €682 M invested, notably through the 2X Challenge initiative
- Agricultural value chains, particularly via the FARM programme: €191 M
- Inclusive investment in Africa: €1 284 M
- Fragile countries: €322 M
- Populations affected by extreme poverty: €233 M
Empowering women economically
With €682 million invested in 2024 in projects directly contributing to gender equality, Proparco is advancing Sustainable Development Goal 5. These projects are certified under the 2X Challenge, an initiative promoting women’s economic inclusion.
In Pakistan, Proparco is supporting Karandaaz, a microfinance institution committed to women’s financial inclusion and climate action. Through the deployment of the ARIZ portfolio guarantee, Proparco is facilitating funding for very small and medium-sized enterprises led by women, often excluded from traditional credit systems. This project aims to reduce inequality in access to finance while promoting female entrepreneurship in rural areas.
Supporting our clients in the low-carbon transition
In 2024, Proparco committed €912 million to projects with positive climate impact, including €50 million specifically for climate adaptation.
One flagship project is a $30 million co-financing for the construction of the Rio Cobre drinking water treatment plant in Jamaica. The project will ensure reliable access to quality water for 600,000 people, while enhancing the island's climate resilience through an innovative local currency financing solution. This initiative brings together Pan Jamaica Group Limited, Eppley Limited, and the French company Vinci Construction Grands Projets.
Strengthening agricultural value chains and their resilience
In 2024, food security was at the heart of Proparco’s work, with €191 million mobilised to support agricultural value chains, notably via the FARM (Food and Agriculture Resilience Mission) initiative. Launched in 2022 by French President Emmanuel Macron, and supported by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the European Union, G7, and African Union, FARM aims to improve food security in fragile countries by strengthening agri-food value chains and local and regional production.
This ambition is also reflected in our partnership with One Acre Fund, a social enterprise active across the African continent that supports smallholder farmers. With a $10 million loan, Proparco is supporting One Acre Fund’s credit sales programme, which strengthens food security, resilience to climate and economic shocks, and gender equality in rural areas.
A strong commitment to impact at the heart of our mission
Expected and actual impacts remain at the core of our action, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals. In 2024, Proparco’s activity generated significant positive outcomes:
- Employment: 31,000 jobs created or maintained directly
- Climate: 920,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided
- Improved access to essential goods and services:
- Access to microcredit: 367,000 beneficiaries
