Proparco is contributing to financing Sonatel’s investment plan in Senegal to help it expand its network and strengthen its gender equality policy.
Client presentation
Sonatel (Société Nationale des Télécommunications du Sénégal), the telecom leader in West Africa, operates in Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone. It has been part of Orange Group since 1997 and offers phone, Internet and business solution services. A key player in digital inclusion and innovation, Sonatel supports economic and social development through strategic investments and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Project description
The project involves financing Sonatel’s 2024 investment plan in Senegal, one of its aims being to expand the coverage and quality of its network.
Project impact
The expected impacts of this financing are as follows:
Employment
- More than 1,700 direct jobs supported in the company over the next 5 years
Climate
- This financing has 7% of climate mitigation/adaptation co-benefits
- Contribution to avoided emissions of 11 tCO2e per year
Gender
- Contribution to gender equality on the basis of the following 2X Challenge criteria: Criterion 2 “Leadership”, as more than 47% of the senior management are women, and Criterion 3 “Employment”, as 39% of employees are women
Sonatel is also committed to increasing the share of women in the management team from 33% to 38% over the next 5 years.
Access
- Support for providing access to new or improved digital services over the next 5 years for more than 2 million people
The project will thereby contribute to the achievement of the following SDGs: (i) SDG 5 – Gender equality, (ii) SDG 8 – Decent work and economic growth, (iii) SDG 9 – Innovation and infrastructure.
