Proparco has allocated two loans totaling $25 million to ACWA to contribute to financing a 100 MW wind farm and two 15 km-long transmission lines in Uzbekistan.
Client presentation
The project sponsor is ACWA Power, a prominent Saudi sponsor with an established presence in Uzbekistan. In August 2023, ACWA had a project portfolio with a capacity of 50.4 GW, including 23.4 GW of renewable energies.
Project description
The Nukus project consists in the construction and operation of a 100 MW wind farm (16 turbines), as well as the construction of two 15 km-long transmission lines in the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan in Uzbekistan. ACWA Power has developed this project and will subsequently operate it. The generation capacity produced will be for the national electricity transmission company, NEGU. Proparco is financing this project alongside DEG and EBRD.
Project impact
The expected impacts of this financing are as follows:
- 21 direct jobs supported over the next 5 years for the project, and 5,366 indirect jobs in the value chain
- This financing has 100% of climate mitigation co-benefits
- Contribution to avoided emissions of 235,200 tCO₂e per year
- Support for new or improved access to electricity for 48,087 beneficiaries over the next 5 years
The project will thereby contribute to the achievement of SDGs 7 “Affordable and clean energy”, 8 “Decent work and economic growth” and 13 “Climate action”.
