Diwaco is a Jordanian project company which is building and will operate an aqueduct conveying water from the Disi aquifer to the city of Amman. This will improve the quality of the water distribution service for several million residents.
Client presentation
Disi Water Company (Diwaco) is a Jordanian project company owned by the construction company Gama Enerji, a joint venture between Turkey’s Gama Holdings and the USA’s General Electric Energy Financial Services. Diwaco will be responsible for the construction and operation of the Disi pipeline under a 25-year concession contract with the State.
Project description
Proparco’s loan will contribute to financing the construction and operation of a drinking water supply system which will withdraw 100 million m3 of groundwater reserves every year from the Disi fossil aquifer and convey the water to the city of Amman. The operation and supply system will have a lifespan of 50 years. The works will involve the construction of 55 collection wells, a supply pipeline approximately 320 km long, as well as various facilities required for the operation and maintenance of the system.
Project impact
The project will supply a significant proportion of Amman’s drinking waters, thereby improving service quality for the 2.5 million residents. The volumes anticipated by the project account for approximately 80% of current consumption in Amman. The exploitation of the Disi aquifer will also preserve certain renewable resources whose future is currently jeopardized by a contribution beyond their sustainability threshold.
