Banque Populaire du Rwanda is a major banking player in Rwanda. PROPARCO is supporting the bank's ambitious plan to support companies in the country, especially SMEs. The project will contribute to financial inclusion and to the diversification of Rwanda's financial sector.
Client presentation
Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR) is Rwanda’s main privately-owned commercial bank, with a market share of some 15%. BPR operates in the retail banking segments and on the corporate lending market. Following the takeover of the bank by Atlas Mara, BPR has defined an ambitious growth plan, which aims to finance companies (particularly SMEs) in Rwanda.
Project description
PROPARCO and FMO have both invested EUR 30m in Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR). This funding aims to finance BPR’s ambitious growth plan. The amount allocated in the form of a loan was arranged by PROPARCO.
Project impact
The project will contribute to financial inclusion and to the diversification of the financial sector, in a country where 32% of the population does not have access to basic financial services and products. The project will help strengthen the private sector by financing Rwandan SMEs mainly operating in the trade and building sectors.
