Proparco is supporting the construction and operation of a wind farm in southeast Turkey. Belen Elektrik’s project also includes the connection to the power grid and the construction of roads to the site.
Client presentation
Belen Elektrik is a project company set up in 2002 to build and operate a wind farm located in the south-eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey. The project is being developed and is 100%-owned by Güris Group, a Turkish conglomerate operating in the construction, automotive industry and energy sectors.
Project description
Proparco’s loan will contribute to financing the construction operation of a 30 MW wind farm in Belen. The project also comprises the connection to the transmission grid, as well as the construction of access roads to the site and connecting roads. The Belen project has been certified “Gold Standard”, a label testifying to the high quality of voluntary carbon offset projects.
Project impact
The Belen project will contribute to increasing the country’s power generation capacity, in a context of strong pressure from demand. It will have a positive impact on the climate: it will reduce Turkey’s dependence on its hydrocarbon imports. It is estimated that it will reduce greenhouse gas emission by 60,000 teq CO2 a year.
