Proparco has allocated technical assistance financing to allow this company specialized in renewable energies to finalize its E&S policy by setting up a dedicated system.
Client presentation
Created in 2015, Nuru (formerly Kivu Green Energy) develops and operates urban hybrid solar mini-grids, both off-grid and on-grid. The company specializes in commercial, industrial and household clients, offering reliable, clean and comparatively more affordable energy than existing private solutions based on diesel generators. Nuru's hybrid mini-grids provide 84% renewable (solar photovoltaic) electricity at rates per kWh that are 30-50% cheaper than the average cost of diesel generators in the North Kivu region.
Project description
A fast-growing company, Nuru structures and integrates E&S issues as a key component, as it has recently started to work on a formal environmental and social management system (ESMS). An ESMS policy document sets out the principles on which the ESMS is based and includes the company’s policies, such as the environmental policy (climate change and biodiversity), the social policy (employees, community and culture) and the public disclosure policy.
Proparco has allocated a technical assistance grant to Nuru for the finalization of this E&S management system and for comprehensive training for its employees who will use this system.
Project impact
The implementation of the ESMS and its full ownership by the Nuru team will generate the following impacts for the beneficiary:
- Improvement in Nuru’s E&S performance in line with IFC standards;
- Improvement in E&S risk management;
- Promotion of Nuru’s image, in particular among international investors.
