JTC
With the aim of developing digital inclusion in Jordan, Proparco is allocating a 15MUSD loan to Jordan Telecommunications Company (“JTC”), a subsidiary of Orange Middle East Africa, focusing primarily on the expansion of its fiber optic network. The loan is complemented by a 1MEUR subsidy to support Orange Jordan’s digital inclusion programs targeting young people and women.

During a signing ceremony held on May 30 in Amman, in presence of Orange’s CEO, Christel Heydemann   the French Ambassador in Jordan, Alexis Le Cour Grandmaison indicated the grant will finance the Coding Academies programs in four governorates for the next two years. This program will benefit to over 240 students, providing them with better job opportunities in Jordan’s dynamic digital ecosystem.

Proparco also committed to contribute to the financing of JTC’s 2023-2024 capital expenditures plan related to the roll-out of its optic fiber operations in four neighboring governorates: Zarqa, Balqa, Jerash and Karak.

Through this blended finance approach, Proparco’s aims at reducing both geographical and social inequalities, by providing high-speed internet together with improving digital inclusion for the Jordanian youth in underserved areas.

Thanks to Orange Jordan’s continued commitment towards gender equality and women empowerment in the country, this project has also qualified for the 2X Challenge, as agreed in a MoU also signed during the ceremony, reflecting Proparco and Orange Jordan’s shared commitment to driving positive impact on women through innovation and technology.

Philippe Mansour, Orange Jordan’s CEO, declared: “This event marked a significant milestone as we open a new chapter of mutual successes that are built on joint visions and shared approaches. Throughout the years, we have nurtured sustainable partnerships achieving powerful impacts on young women and men across all of Jordan. With this new partnership that we embark upon with Proparco, we will be expanding our reach to include more coders and programmers empowering them to start their professional journey”.

Françoise Lombard, CEO of Proparco, said: “We are proud to partner with Orange Jordan on this project fostering digital social and territorial inclusion in the country. JTC’s investment in infrastructures and training will be conducive to  job creation and business opportunities for people in Jordan. Partnering with a major global player like Orange is both exciting and necessary in regard to Proparco’s commitment and ambitions to support the digital transition in the Middle East and Africa and beyond.  ”
