In 2023, Proparco provided Qualagric Asbl, a leading Congolese agri-operator, with a funding and technical assistance of EUR 400,000 to support the development of the cassava value chain in Democratic Republic of Congo. This package will fund the acquisition of improved seeds, relevant machinery and training for 750 small producers and farmers collaborating with Qualagric Asbl.

ACEP Sénégal: How microfinance is boosting small players in the agri-business sector
For over 30 years, ACEP Sénégal has been partnering small players in the agri-food sector by facilitating access to financial services. Its presence throughout Senegal, working alongside the rural population, make it a key player in microfinance. ACEP Sénégal has recently been granted a €10 million loan by Proparco, helping it to meet two key challenges: food sovereignty and the financial inclusion of women.

In the Indian state of Maharashtra, the Sahyadri Farms (a farmer collective owned company) – supported by Proparco – has managed to build a network of 24,000 smallholder farmers and become the country’s largest exporter of fresh grapes and other crops.

Merec: An agrifood player with sustainable values

Merec, the leading local player on the wheat and maize processing market in Mozambique, has diversified in recent years into manufacturing pasta, biscuits and animal feed. Merec currently operates four industrial sites in the three main regions in the country, in Maputo, Beira and Nacala. PROPARCO’s investment is financing its development and is contributing to strengthening food security in the country.

Golden Rice was founded in 2009 and is Cambodia’s leading exporter of high-end jasmin rice. In 2013, Proparco granted the company a special loan of 10 million dollars over five years to help Golden Rice finance its growth strategy.

This project in support of the Tereos Group is in many ways one of the most important in our Brazilian portfolio. First of all because it provides support to a key sector in the Brazilian agro-industry, and this type of approach has historically been central to PROPARCO’s strategy. This project is also essential to us because of what it covers and because of its positive impacts, in particular with respect to climate.

Utilising, developing and preserving forests: finding the balance

Forests are important carbon sinks that play a vital role in maintaining the world’s ecological balances. However, population growth and urbanisation are intensifying pressure on forested land in the southern hemisphere. The combined effects of agricultural development and overexploitation of fuel wood are causing nearly 13 million hectares of forest to disappear every year, particularly in the forest basins of the Amazon, Central Africa and Indonesia.
