The Africa’s largest wind farm was officially inaugurated today in the presence of President H.E. Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta and representatives of international donors, including Proparco. Proparco had mobilized a EUR 50m financing to the project company Lake Turkana Wind Power Limited (LTWP) to finance the construction of this flagship farm located in northern Kenya, in the Rift Valley. It will supply 17% of the electricity generated annually in the country and an energy 60% cheaper than the energy generated by thermal power plants in operation in the country.

In the slum areas of Kenya’s capital, indoor flush toilets are a rarity. Most people have to make do with plastic bags and outdoor pit latrines. To remedy the situation, a company called Sanergy has built up a network of low-cost pay toilets that are put to optimal use, given that the organic waste is converted into fertilizer and sold to farmers.

The Aga Khan hospitals in East Africa have received a EUR 2.3 million grant from Proparco to increase access to health care services by boosting oxygen supply and supporting needy patients with quality care.

Amref International University (AMIU), a subsidiary of Amref Health Africa, has entered into a landmark partnership with Proparco, the French development finance institution, securing a USD 5 Million (Ksh 650 Million) financing for the development of its new campus. Proparco has granted Badili a $400,000 loan through the Bridge facility to support its initiative of offering refurbished smartphones, aimed at reducing electronic waste and providing consumers with affordable devices. Findev Canada, Agence française de développement (AFD) and Proparco have announced the launch of a capacity-building project for women entrepreneurs in the context of the covid-19 pandemic.

Proparco, is pleased to announce its partnership with IBL Group, the largest conglomerate of Mauritius (listed on the Mauritius Stock Exchange), and DEG, a subsidiary of German KfW Group, to jointly acquire a 40% interest in Naivas International, which owns 100% of the shares of Naivas Ltd, a leading modern retail chain in Kenya. Successful completion of the transaction is subject to conditions.

This investment will aid Moringa to prepare for Series A funding in 2023. Apart from International expansion outside Kenya, the funding from Proparco will also facilitate the broadening of the range of courses offered by Moringa. Currently the institution offers Software Engineering, Data Science and Soft Skills courses with plans to offer courses in UI/UX design in the near future.

The investment will continue Diani Beach Hospital’s growth, thus improving healthcare provision for hundreds of thousands of Kenyans living in an underserved part of the country.

Based in Nairobi, poa! internet is an innovative enterprise, providing fast, affordable, unlimited Internet to low-income population. Poa! internet received an investment of US$6.1 million from the Novastar Fund. The FISEA facility, managed by Proparco, invested US$16,5 million in Novastar.

Proparco, Si Advisers LLP ('Si') and IFU have signed an agreement to provide growth capital to Global Tea & Commodities (‘Global Tea’), a tea, coffee, and macadamia business with operations in Kenya and Malawi.

In line with the Choose Africa initiative and as part of the visit to Kenya of the French Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade and Economic Attractiveness, Franck Riester, Proparco granted Equity Bank 5 billion KES guarantees (€39 million) to help the Kenyan bank further support job creating MSMEs. Proparco also granted a €550,000 technical assistance facility to support Equity Group Foundation’s endeavours to increase access to health services. The EURIZ guarantee and the technical assistance grant benefited from support from the European Union and the Organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.
