Commissioning ceremony for Lake Turkana, Africa’s largest wind farm, supported by Proparco
The Africa’s largest wind farm was officially inaugurated today in the presence of President H.E. Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta and representatives of international donors, including Proparco. Proparco had mobilized a EUR 50m financing to the project company Lake Turkana Wind Power Limited (LTWP) to finance the construction of this flagship farm located in northern Kenya, in the Rift Valley. It will supply 17% of the electricity generated annually in the country and an energy 60% cheaper than the energy generated by thermal power plants in operation in the country.

To remedy the situation, a company called Sanergy has built up a network of low-cost pay toilets that are put to optimal use, given that the organic waste is converted into fertilizer and sold to farmers.

Proparco, is pleased to announce its partnership with IBL Group, the largest conglomerate of Mauritius (listed on the Mauritius Stock Exchange), and DEG, a subsidiary of German KfW Group, to jointly acquire a 40% interest in Naivas International, which owns 100% of the shares of Naivas Ltd, a leading modern retail chain in Kenya. Successful completion of the transaction is subject to conditions.

This investment will aid Moringa to prepare for Series A funding in 2023. Apart from International expansion outside Kenya, the funding from Proparco will also facilitate the broadening of the range of courses offered by Moringa. Currently the institution offers Software Engineering, Data Science and Soft Skills courses with plans to offer courses in UI/UX design in the near future.

Proparco has signed a USD 50m facility with NCBA Kenya, a leader in the financial services sector. The funding will contribute to NCBA’s “Change The Story” sustainability agenda. NCBA is joining the 2X Challenge through this project, an initiative promoting women entrepreneurship and SMEs.
