The El Ghazala technopole in the suburbs north of Tunis is home to one of the country’s top schools: ESPRIT, which stands for the École Supérieure Privée d’Ingénierie et de Technologie. It opened twelve years ago, with 40 students attending. Since then, their ranks have swollen to nearly 5,000, some of them from all over French-speaking Africa.

Proparco has taken an equity participation worth 5.9 million in Enda Tamweel, the pioneering microfinance institution in Tunisia. This participation is part of the microfinance institution's reserved capital increase amounting to a total amount of 72 million dinars (about 24.3 million euros) in which five other international investors participated, including the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO).

Scatec and Toyota Tsusho – Aeolus join forces for Tunisia solar projects,
Scatec ASA, a leading renewable energy provider, and Aeolus SAS, part of the Japanese conglomerate Toyota Tsusho Group, have signed a partnership agreement to jointly develop and own renewable energy projects in Tunisia. In parallel, financial close has been achieved for the 120 MW Sidi Bouzid and Tozeur solar projects (each 60 MW), which are part of the partnership agreement. Scatec will now start construction of the projects. Proparco and European Bank of Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) are supporting this project actively.

Enda has been the leading microfinance institution in Tunisia and the Arab world since 1995, by demonstrating that microcredit is a powerful driver for poverty reduction and economic development. Today, it offers a range of customized products that contribute to the financial empowerment of marginalized populations, especially women. It offers free non-financial services (support, training, awareness-raising workshops…), while continuing its microcredit activity for entrepreneurs.

At the Tunisia 2020 Conference, in addition to several memoranda of understanding and financing agreements signed by AFD Group, Proparco has signed an agreement to provide support for the Enda microfinance institution, rounding out two recent agreements signed last October which are also designed to help the Tunisian microfinace sector to grow.
