PROPARCO is supporting the construction of a hydropower plant near the Itezhi Tezhi dam in Zambia. This project – which will create 450 jobs – is being implemented under the country’s first public-private partnership in the energy sector.
Itezhi Tezhi Power Corporation is owned 50/50 by Zambia’s national electricity company (ZESCO) and TATA Africa Holding, a subsidiary of the Indian group TATA.
PROPARCO’s loan will contribute to financing the construction and operation of a 120 MW power plant at the foot of the Itezhi Tezhi Dam, which was built in 1978 in the Zambezi Basin. This project is the first public-private partnership in Zambia’s energy sector.
This project will increase Zambia’s current installed capacity by 7.5% and will create 450 jobs during the construction phase. It will contribute to improving the reliability of Zambia’s electricity supply, both for populations and for essential activities for economic development (agriculture, irrigation, etc.). This project will also maintain the predominance of renewable energies in Zambia’s energy mix.
