Biosev is one of the largest producers of sugar, ethanol and biomass in Brazil. The company is implementing an ambitious program, comprising improvements in social and environmental practices.
Biosev is the second largest sugar and ethanol producer in the world, with a capacity to process 36.4 Mt of sugar cane. Its 11 industrial sites throughout Brazil have a production capacity of 2.5 Mt of sugar and 1.6 Mm3 of ethanol. The company is also one of the largest biomass energy generators (from cane residue) in the country (cogeneration capacity of 1,346 GWh). Biosev is a subsidiary 72%-owned by the trading group Louis Dreyfus.
Proparco’s loan will contribute to financing Biosev’s investment program. This includes: the renewal of sugar cane plantations, intercrop maintenance and expenditure (agricultural and industrial), crop treatment and industrial maintenance at the sites, and improvements in environmental and social practices.
This project will contribute to the fight against climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to replacing petrol by ethanol and producing electricity using biomass. The annual reduction in emissions is estimated at 30,000 teq CO2. Biosev’s activity will contribute to local economic development in the regions where the plants are located: Ribeirão Preto, Mato Grosso do Sul, Northeast, Leme and Lagoa da Prata. It will specifically contribute to job creation (13,000 direct jobs and 6,000 indirect jobs).
