Education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. Today, 127 million children and adolescents are deprived of education and 250 million children cannot read or write.

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 aims to ensure access to quality education for all and to promote lifelong learning opportunities.

Provided it is regulated and coordinated by public authorities, the expansion of private education can effectively complement and strengthen public education provision. That is why Proparco participates in the financing of higher education institutions, vocational training centres and universities.

Proparco's investments have 3 main objectives:

Promoting access to education, especially higher education, by supporting the creation of school networks and university campuses, the development of student loans...
Supporting the development of quality educational programmes: new curricula, teacher training, etc.
Strengthening the vocational and technical training offer, in partnership with local businesses, to enable young people to acquire skills that are useful in their civic life and adapted to the needs of the labour market.

Enko

Proparco's investment in Enko

By acquiring a €1 million stake in Enko Education in 2016, Proparco is supporting a young pan-African group and its innovative offer that completes the public school system. This investment financed the first years of operation of existing schools, as well as the launch of new schools in 2016 and 2017.

In total, Proparco has committed nearly €100 million to the education sector between 2013 and 2017. These investments are part of Proparco's objective to enable 12 million people to access essential goods and services each year by 2020.

By putting a cap on the number of students per class and by focusing on the preparation of the International Baccalaureate, a real gateway to the largest universities, Enko gives its students the best chances of success.

In less than 3 years, this network has already enabled several of its students to integrate the most prestigious African, American and European universities. Enko therefore participates in the training of the elites their countries need.

Enko, a network of international schools in Africa

ENKO responds to the urgent need for quality education in sub-Saharan African countries by expanding and improving the supply of educational services for middle classes in target countries where young people did not previously have access to them.

Enko aims to offer a wide range of educational programmes in 30 secondary schools in French-speaking Africa - in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo - as well as in South Africa, with the aim of setting up a curriculum leading to the International Baccalaureate.

By charging lower prices than observed elsewhere, the project will enable nearly 6,000 African students, particularly from the middle class, to access this type of service. Rates are expected to be more than three times lower than in most African countries for this type of education.
