SGAM AI Kantara
In May 2008, Proparco took a €6M stake at the second closing of the SGAM AI Kantara private equity fund. This fund has a total size of €150M – including a Moroccan investment vehicle – and will be investing in the Maghreb and Mashrek regions
The team is established in Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt where it has experienced staff, most of whom have dual nationality and sound knowledge of the economy and local players. The fund also relies on a team based in Paris at the SGAM which has extensive experience in structuring and supervising private equity investment transactions in emerging economies.
The fund targets mature medium-sized enterprises and is expected to make between 10 and 15 transactions of between €5M and €15M in a wide range of geographical areas. It will take positions in development capital operations as well as buyouts and transfers in order to reinforce the financial structure and governance of these businesses during a critical phase of their development. In all cases, the fund will be actively involved in the management and governance of businesses in its portfolio.
Through this investment, Proparco is both helping to boost the regional SME fabric and scale up private equity investment in the area via a locally established international team.
