The think tank Overseas development (ODI) located in London, that provides public polymakers with information and advice on poverty reduction, has been seeking, for the past decade, answers to two fundamental questions : How does tourism affect the poor? and How can tourism development be changed to increase net benefits to poor people ?

The International Finance corporation (IFC) finances private sector projects in developing countries. It operates in the hotel sector, and supports establishments that, via their activity, have a positive impact on the economy, poverty reduction and the environment.
