South Africa : The AFD and Proparco at the Clean Development Mechanism Africa 2007 conference
The AFD and PROPARCO participated in the CDM (Clean Development Mechanisms) conference held in Johannesburg from the 29th to 31st January 2007.
The main topics that were discussed are the development of CDM projects in Sub-Saharan Africa by the UNEP (United Nations Environment Program), the policy and procedures of the South African DNA (Designated National Authority) in assessing applications for the host country approval, the financing of CDM projects, the assessment of CDM potential to contribute to a sustainable development of Southern Africa.
Amongst different case studies on the implementation of CDM in South Africa, the landfill gas to electricity project (collection of methane produced by the fermentation of waste in three landfills of household refuse) implemented by the Ethekwini municipality (Durban) has been discussed. This project has been financed by a long term loan of the AFD (know more about this project).
This conference has allowed networking with major players in the clean development market in Sub-Saharan Africa.
