Financing the construction of airports in Cambodia
PROPARCO and the SCA (Société Concessionnaire de l’Aéroport - a subsidiary of the VINCI group) of Cambodia signed a financing agreement on 7th June 2007 for US$ 17.5 million. Together with a loan from the IFC for the same amount, this loan will provide for the expansion of the Sihanoukville airport, which the Cambodian authorities have recently entrusted to the SCA.
The SCA was established in 1995 to manage Phnom Penh airport, who then, in the year 2000, took on the management of Siem Reap airport, the nearest to the Angkor temples, followed by Sihanoukville airport in 2006. The aim of the Cambodian Authorities was to boost tourism in this region.
This is the second loan PROPARCO has granted to the SCA; the first being a US$ 10 million loan in 2004. Passenger numbers in SCA managed airports have increased by 40% since the time of this first loan. The current loan will allow the SCA to continue to develop its activity and to make the necessary investments at Sihanoukville.
