Supporting the creation of a private cancer clinic in Tunisia

Sector: Health
Implementation: Hannibal International Clinic
Country: Tunisia

Context

Tunisia is experiencing considerable changes in health care needs (epidemiological transition and ageing population). A study now available places cancer among the first three causes of death in Tunisia. All parameters converge towards a rising trend for the incidence of cancer over the coming years. Although the public health care system is relatively effective in covering “traditional” health care needs, it is not the case for the management of chronic and emerging pathologies. This is a major problem for public health in Tunisia today. The creation of the Hannibal Clinic is line with a policy conducted by public authorities to give incentives for the development of the private health care sector. The implementation of the health insurance reform has provided new prospects for increasing affordability among the population.

Objectives

To participate in financing Tunisia’s first private cancer clinic. The investor round includes a competent management team and a group of doctors that are among the top practitioners in the specialisations covered by the clinic.

Project description

The project involves building and operating a private medico-surgical clinic called the “Hannibal International Clinic”. It is located on a strategic site at the Berges du Lac in Tunis and will be equipped with 153 beds which will make it one of Tunisia’s biggest clinics in terms of capacity. Cancer treatment will be the main focus of the project which will also include a cardiovascular unit and an orthopaedic trauma unit. The technical platform envisaged includes all the equipment required from screening to treatment and palliative care. It will meet the highest international standards and will be managed by a team of renowned Tunisian practitioners.

Impacts

This project will provide a solution to the limits of public health care supply. It will help provide better coverage for demand and decongest certain services of the University Hospital for the management of chronic and emerging pathologies, such as cancer which is a major public health issue. It will also promote the development and dissemination of new technologies. The project provides new doctors with an attractive professional environment which can help prevent health professionals from leaving to work abroad, since they will be able to find favourable conditions for their establishment in Tunisia.
